Respond, recover and reconstruct; our path to a return to competitive school sport…

It could be argued that right now, there has never been a more important time for the provision of physical education, school sport and physical activity for young people. As we continue to deal with the impact of Covid-19, there are undeniable challenges that surround this delivery, but we cannot allow these to hold us back: the life-shaping benefits of an active curriculum matter too much. Whatever the challenges that do lie ahead, we do not have to journey alone: you can rest assured that Hull Active Schools will be at the forefront of supporting schools to create and adapt to a ‘new normal’. Schools are notoriously resilient places, adept at jumping through hoops and overcoming hurdles. With our characteristic determination, passion and creativity, we all have the chance to work together to ensure that PE and sport provide a much needed distraction for our pupils in the months to come, forming new, positive experiences and memories that can last a lifetime.

In your school, whether you are building on strong foundations or you are in need of a little more support, Hull Active Schools are ready to help you in any way they can. Through our collaborative approach, our professional development and our sports leadership, we have a wealth of experience available to you and your school team. In addition, the Hull Active Schools competitive school sport and physical education offer will once again provide pupils of all ages, interests and abilities with an unrivalled opportunity to experience all that sport has to offer.

Our initial response to the school closures was to create a virtual platform of resources for parents, young people and schools to ensure physical activity continued. These resources ensured a lack of access to sports equipment, open space or friends did not inhibit young people across Hull to maintain physical activity and sport activities as an avenue to improving physical and mental health and well-being throughout lock down. This virtual element will remain until it is safe to return to face-to-face delivery.

Next must come our recovery to ensure that physical education, school sport and physical activity is positioned to support young people to reintegrate back into routine, structure, friendship and opportunity. Our competitions and programs provide a unique platform for students to reconstruct relationships, understand their local community and rebuild confidence as learners; whether that’s the confidence to make decisions and support others or instilling self-belief and resilience to support personal recovery.

Despite the upcoming challenges we all face in education, what this period of change and uncertainty does give is an ability to reconstruct what we do. This, we believe, is part of our challenge for the academic year ahead: helping our school communities thrive in their present and soar into their future. One of the many great lessons we have been reminded of as a nation in recent months is that as a TEAM, Together Everybody Achieves More. We invite you to join with us at Hull Active Schools to work together for the benefits of our young people and schools. Together we can meet the challenges of the months ahead: pupils’ lives can be enhanced through a revitalised curriculum where activity is its heartbeat. Together, through PE, sport, and physical activity, we can help to make it happen.
