Who we are
Hull Active Schools CIC began operating in 2016 and became a Community Interest Company (not for profit) in 2020.
We draw upon external funding and support from our partner schools to employ a specialist team in PE, physical activity, and school sport. Our collective focus is to expand and enhance provision so that every young person has access to high-quality opportunities.
We pay particular attention to how our competitive sport opportunities can align with personal development and how we can assist schools, through the power of sport, to achieve wider whole school priorities. Our events are tailored to equip students to be responsible, respectful, active citizens who contribute positively to society; developing their understanding of fundamental British values through our sporting values; developing their understanding and appreciation of diversity; celebrating what we have in common and promoting respect.
We manage and deliver the School Games offer across the city of Hull for 103 educational institutions. The School Games puts physical activity and competitive sport at the heart of schools and provides more young people with the opportunity to enjoy competing and achieve their personal best.
Maintaining the traditional school sport associations and competitive sport opportunities is the bedrock of what we do. We typically have over 30,000 student attendances recorded during an academic year through our extensive and varied school sport competition calendar for Secondary, Primary and Special Schools.
At every opportunity we engage and work with local community sport clubs to establish positive school-community club links. Promoting a pathway from our events to further opportunities outside of school, creating a culture of activity across the city.
Learning can be enhanced and improved when physically active. Growing evidence suggests brain function and pupil engagement within lessons improves leading to better concentration and learning. We’re committed to supporting schools in Hull to achieve the Active 60 ambition set out by the Chief Medical Officer in England.
We provide a wide range of staff development opportunities aligned to the needs of schools and educational landscape that result in a more physically active school environment. We offer centralised training workshops for school staff to develop the delivery of more physically active learning and provide direct school support through our staff development partners, NGBs and the Youth Sport Trust.
We are working closely with a number of schools in Hull to Pilot the Creating Active Schools framework.
Our sport leadership academy starts in KS2 and runs right through a young persons education journey to KS5. We provide training, deployment opportunities and community exit-routes. Our primary school Activity Ambassador Scheme gives a framework for young people to develop their leadership skills in primary school. This includes many opportunities for young people to come and help deliver a variety of different sport competitions throughout the academic year to give them a real life experience of taking on the role of a sports coach, referee or umpire.
We ensure our school sport events and competitions provide a safe environment for young leaders to learn and develop their own skills.
