ACTIVE LEARNING

We have been advocates for more physically active classroom and school environments for many years. We first launched the Hull Schools Stand Up campaign in 2016 to encourage school teaching staff to consider incorporating physical tasks, challenges and activities into classroom based lessons to reduce the amount of time young people spend sedentary during a typical school day.

Every school should prioritise the delivery of 60 active minutes as an entitlement for every child to support improvements in their physical literacy, social, emotional and physical wellbeing. Plenty of resources are now readily available for teaching staff to increase levels of physical activity in the classroom.

We recommend all Hull schools access the our new ACTIVE SCHOOL HUB, register and complete an active heat map for their school, class or specific cohorts of students. You will then receive a bespoke action plan to support you on the journey to becoming a more active school. We are available to meet and go through this process with a member of staff at your school.

In addition, you can access a wide variety of staff training opportunities with us to upskill your teaching staff on how to embed physical activity. To view these opportunities please access the ‘Staff CPD’ via the menu at the top of this page.

Active children are more effective learners with evidence showing that more time spent sitting down learning have a detrimental impact on effective learning behaviours. Being active before, during and after lessons can have a positive effect on concentration, cognition and engagement in learning as well as the health benefits that come with moving throughout the school day.

The UK Cheif Medical Officers guidlines for physical activity are the minimum requirements for the prevention of ill health and disease. Therefore, you should treat the 60 active minutes as the bare minimum entitlement for all young people.
